Internship Opportunities

Please note: Bacon Street Youth and Family Services is accepting interns for Administration only for the Spring of 2024. We are not accepting any clinical interns at this time.

Welcome!  We are thrilled that you are considering applying for an internship with us!  We pride ourselves on being an organization that provides high quality learning for students who are interested in entering the nonprofit and/or mental health field.  We want to be up front with you about our expectations so that you can have a clear understanding of what you will get when interning with Bacon Street Youth and Family Services.

As a learner, we ask the following of you…

  • Please arrive on time, and depart on time.  This demonstrates professionalism and commitment to the clients, the staff, the agency, and the work we do.
  • Please dress appropriately.  Business casual is our standard for attire for the agency, and if you need assistance on how to define this, please let us know!  All interns will be provided a work t-shirt for events and activities, and we ask that you wear khaki pants and closed toed shoes (not sneakers).
  • Please wear your name tag when attending events and activities to ensure that you are identified as a part of the Bacon Street team.
  • Please represent Bacon Street Youth and Family Services well.  Remember, you are an ambassador for the agency.  When serving as a part of your internship, please conduct yourself professionally.
  • Please come to the agency prepared to work at your internship.  We expect that you will need to be able to demonstrate to your school about the learning that you have received, and your experience is important!  Please don’t waste this opportunity to learn something new.
  • Ask for help!  If you don’t understand something, please ask.  We know that it can be busy and intimidating at times, but we want to help you be more effective and have a good experience.
  • Take the initiative.  You will only learn as much as you put into your internship experience.  Ask for new projects, share your ideas, and work hard.  You’ve got this!

As your internship site we will:

  • Hold you to high standards of work quality and excellence.
  • Engage you actively in your learning process.
  • Give you a chance to succeed, but if you don’t, we will give you a chance to learn from it.
  • Provide an ethical, professional work environment that is warm and welcoming, and is focused on our accomplishing our mission every day.
  • Work with your school instructors to ensure that we are doing everything we can to make this a rewarding experience, including providing you with weekly supervision and feedback opportunities.
  • Encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.  Sometimes learning is uncomfortable, but in the end, it will be worth it.
  • Expose you to experiences that are a part of the day to day workings on a growing and thriving nonprofit agency.  This means that you will, at times, be asked to do things that might be outside of your traditional scope of work.  Don’t worry… this is all part of what it means to be working for a nonprofit.
  • Provide you with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to successfully complete your internship.

It’s important to understand:

  • We require that all interns provide a minimum of 10 hours of work on a weekly basis.  The reason is simple, we don’t feel that you will get a quality experience if you don’t do at least 10 hours per week.
  • Trainings are also a required part of your learning experience, and you will be given guidance by your supervisor or senior agency staff on what these requirements will be.
  • You will be asked to help out in a variety of different ways, but it’s all part of the package of working for a nonprofit.  If you are asked to do something that you feel uncomfortable about, please speak with your supervisor so that we can navigate this together.
  • Volunteering and Training could be during the day, as well as at night or on the weekends. We do understand that you have other commitments in addition to your internship and it is crucial to balance all these commitments. So, it will be crucial that you communicate with you supervisor regarding Volunteering, Fundraising or Training expectations as they relate to your internship.
  • Clinical internships are offered to graduate students.

Bacon Street is seeking 2-3 students with an interest in working with families within the Greater Williamsburg community. It is preferred that students are in a psych or public health-related program. Responsibilities will include:

  • Attending a 3 full-day training to receive certification in facilitating the evidence-based program, Strengthening Families Program 10-14 (SFP 10-14). Dates TBD, but we will try to accommodate class schedules through potential weekend training. Please connect with me ASAP if interested in this opportunity so we may work through this w/ the trainer’s schedule.
  • Weekly preparation and facilitation of SFP 10-14, a 7 week program held Wednesday evenings between 5:30-8pm. Several interns will support each other in facilitating the youth and family portions of the program with the potential to also cover childcare (if families need this service) on a rotating schedule in an effort to ensure all interns have the opportunity to gain a variety of experiences.
  • Development and presentation of activities around the national campaign, Red Ribbon Week, to be presented to youth (likely middle school age) in a school setting. This will require availability during week day, but there is flexibility to work around your class schedule.
  • REVIVE! training facilitation. This training allows you to lead lay rescuer trainings for the purpose of identifying an opioid overdose and teaching the steps to respond to an overdose through administering the opioid antagonist, naloxone. We offer this training to the community both virtually and in person as part of our harm reduction efforts.
  • Supporting additional community-based prevention programming opportunities as they arise.

This paid opportunity is for the fall semester with a potential invitation to extend into spring as well. Please email me at ajarvis@baconstreet.org in addition to expressing interest through this platform to ensure you are not overlooked. I may also be reached on my office phone at 757-253-0111 x201. We’ve had great success working with W&M undergrad and grad students in our prevention department, and I look forward to connecting with even more of you this semester and beyond!

Still excited??  If you are, please fill out the following internship application AND send a copy of your resume to admin@baconstreet.org.
