Getting Started

Ready to start your mental health or substance use journey?

  1. Gather your information.

Have in mind the reason you are calling. Are you or your child feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, using substances, struggling with homelessness and need help, etc.? If you are unsure, that’s ok! We can help you work through it, free of judgment and full of compassion.

Speed up the process by having your insurance card ready or, if you are under or uninsured, knowing your financial information to assess payment options. No one will ever be turned away from lack of ability to pay. We accept most major insurances.

2. Call Us.

Contact our main office at 757-253-0111 to begin the process of finding the right counselor or service for your needs, and discuss insurance and payment options. We will talk through your needs, and call you back for a prescreening to find the right counselor for you!

3. Send in your forms

Before your first appointment can be scheduled, you will need set up your patient portal and complete your forms. Please note that counselors cannot see any clients without their paperwork being done before their first session is scheduled. We look forward to working with you on your journey!

Forms can be completed in your portal or by hand. You’ll need to complete the client services manual and client intake forms. If you wish to share information with a school or other healthcare agency, please complete the release of information.

4. Schedule your appointment

Keep in mind your availability and schedule your first appointment. Check out our FAQ page or email us at rperkins@baconstreet.org for additional information.

FAQ before you get started:

Do you perform stand-alone psychological evaluations (ie. a series of tests and assessment tools to determine mental health diagnosis)?

In short, no. We do not perform assessments alone, outside of counseling. However, we do mental health assessments to include DSM-5 diagnoses as part of their intake for counseling (ie. ongoing treatment). If you need a psychological assessment, you will need a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. We often refer to Oceanside Evaluations, Colonial Behavioral Health, Newport News CSB, and Middle Peninsula Northern Neck CSB for these individual evaluations.

Do you treat actively suicidal, homicidal or self harming clients?

While we do provide services for individuals who have a history of self harm or suicidal ideations, we do not treat those that are actively self harming, suicidal (including suicidal ideations), or homicidal. If you or your child are in the active stage of any of these, please contact your local CSB, hospital, or crisis center. You or your child will need to be assessed for treatment needs (inpatient or outpatient). If outpatient treatment is an option after being assessed, we will be able to treat you or your child.
