FAQ

Do you perform stand-alone psychological evaluations (ie. a series of tests and assessment tools to determine mental health diagnosis)? In short, no. We do not perform assessments alone, outside of counseling. However, we do mental health assessments to include DSM-5 diagnoses as part of their intake for counseling (ie. ongoing treatment). If you need an individual psychological assessment, you will need a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. We often refer to Oceanside Evaluations, Colonial Behavioral Health, Newport News CSB, and Middle Peninsula Northern Neck CSB for these individual evaluations.

Do you treat actively suicidal, homicidal or self harming clients? While we do provide services for individuals who have a history of self harm or suicidal ideations, we do not treat those that are actively self harming, suicidal (including suicidal ideations), or homicidal. If you or your child are in the active stage of any of these, please contact your local CSB, hospital, or crisis center. You or your child will need to be assessed for treatment needs (inpatient or outpatient). If outpatient treatment is an option after being assessed, we will be able to treat you or your child.

What is the patient portal?

The patient portal, Valant, is the software used for telehealth sessions and client information. This HIPAA compliant platform is your way to keep track of paperwork needs, session information, billing and insurance info, and even can be used to communicate with us!

How do I login to my patient portal after I go through the setup process?

After you have set up your patient portal with our operations team, you can log in to your portal here.

Why do you need my insurance information before I can schedule an appointment?

Allowing us to verify insurance ensures that your services will be covered before you begin them. This also allows us to screen for the best therapist to match you with, as all therapists do not take all insurances. We have options for payments if necessary.

Which insurances do you accept?

Bacon Street accepts most major insurances and Medicaid.

What if my insurance isn’t accepted by your team of therapists?

We offer self-pay, sliding scale fee, and charity care options for those needing clinical mental health counseling. Clients receiving counseling through our JHP program have no charge. We also accept care credit.

Do you accept clients older than 26 for counseling?

Yes! We serve youth ages 10-26 and their families. This means that parents, guardians, caregivers, and the entire family unit can receive counseling at Bacon Street. Our EMDR therapy and substance use counseling programs often serve adult relatives of youth clients. Children under age 10 are seen on a case-by-case basis.

Can I get Narcan from Bacon Street?

Yes! Make an appointment and bring in your REVIVE! card that shows you have taken the training to receive free Narcan. If you haven’t taken REVIVE! Narcan training yet, sign up for our free virtual class on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm.
