The Bridges Project

The Beginning

The Bridges Project began as a desire to meet the needs of youth who might not excel in a “traditional” classroom environment and might be struggling with transitional changes as they moved from middle school to high school. Historically, Bacon Street had once had a program in the 1970’s-1980’s that was focused on wilderness/adventure based programming, and we wanted to resurrect this program with a twist that included the peer to peer mentoring element that was seen as a needed component for student success. By combining these two needs into one program, The Bridges Project was launched!

For the 2022-2023 school year, The Bridges Project is offered at Warhill High School, Lafayette High School, and Jamestown High School.

The Goal

For Mentees and Mentors alike, Bridges will:

  • Increase feelings of school connectedness
  • Increase feelings of self-esteem
  • Promote resiliency
  • Promote responsible decision making
  • Promote positive mental health

The Program

Jumpstart

Each summer, The Bridges Project kicks off with Jumpstart. This is a multi-day outdoor adventure where the mentors and mentees are introduced to each other and the staff, and are given the space to create true connections. The week includes activities such as:

  • Camping
  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Rowing
  • Rafting
  • Rock climbing

During The Year

Every-other week, Bacon Street staff and interns visit each school to connect with the Bridges mentors and mentees.

  • Staff and interns come bearing snacks and skills promoting social-emotional growth for mentees and mentors alike
  • Offers a safe space for the group to discuss what is on their minds
  • Cultivates support for one another
  • Creates authentic bonds

Each month during the school year, the group takes outings that promote togetherness, leadership, and teamwork.

Bridge Up Ceremony

Wrapping up each school year, mentors and mentees are honored and acknowledged for their efforts, perseverance, growth, and contributions to the program.

Mentees are given the opportunity to “Bridge Up” and return as future mentors so they may pass along skills they have achieved to future mentees.
