How shrimp and flag football are helping Bacon Street this fall

Two popular community events—the Kiwanis Shrimp Feast in Williamsburg and Priority Automotive Charities, which hosts the the Priority Toyota Charity Bowl in Norfolk—have chosen Bacon Street Youth and Family Services as a beneficiary of the events’ proceeds.

The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg’s annual Shrimp Feast will be held this year on Saturday, September 11, at Jamestown Settlement. The proceeds of this event and other Kiwanis Club fundraisers will support Bacon Street’s “The Bridges Project.” Bridges is a peer-to-peer mentoring program that helps students with the often-difficult transition from middle to high school.

Priority Automotive Charities selected Bacon Street to be one of its 34 charities for 2021. The Priority Toyota Charity Bowl will be held on Friday, September 10 at Old Dominion University’s S.B. Ballard Stadium. The Inaugural Priority Lexus Golf Tournament will follow on Monday, September 20 at Virginia Beach National Golf Course. Priority Automotive Charities’ funding will support Bacon Street’s charity care fund, which ensures that uninsured and underinsured adolescents and young adults have access to behavioral health and substance use treatment.

Emerging evidence is shining light on the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of youth from all backgrounds. Adolescents are especially vulnerable to stressful life events, which can lead to lower levels of motivation, lower concentration, poorer achievement, psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and suicide. The support from the community right now is crucial to our ability to serve kids and families when they need us most.
