ABOUT BACON STREET
Organized in 1971 by concerned citizens, Bacon Street is a
private, not-for-profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors
representing the four jurisdictions it serves. The program is licensed and
certified as an outpatient substance abuse center by the Virginia
Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse
Services; is a member agency of both United Way of Greater Williamsburg and
United Way of the Virginia Peninsula; and is affiliated by contract with
the Colonial Services Board. The program is also a charter member of The
Virginia Association of Drug and Alcohol Programs.
WHAT BACON STREET DOES
Bacon Street offers a
variety of services to address the problem of alcohol and other drug abuse
in our communities.
TREATMENT
SERVICES:
These services are for
people under the age of 19 who may be experiencing problems with alcohol or
other drugs. When a young person or family first contacts Bacon Street,
they are often unsure of what the problem is and of what to do about it.
Bacon Street helps these individuals by:
-
Determining whether there is
a problem and what the nature and extent of the problem is.
-
Providing counseling and
education to the adolescent and their family so that all will understand
the problem and what part they can play in overcoming it.
-
Referring to other agencies
and organizations who may be able to assist in overcoming their problem.
For young people who are
before the Juvenile Court or who have been apprehended for possession of or
use of alcohol or other drugs at school, Bacon Street offers a structured
group education and counseling program under the title Youth Offender
Program. Young people referred for this program often receive individual
and family services in addition to their involvement in the group. People
age 19 and older who may be experiencing problems should contact the Adult
Substance Abuse Program of the Colonial Services Board at 220-3200.
PREVENTION
SERVICES:
Within the scope of its prevention philosophy, Bacon Street intervenes
directly in the lives of young people who are at high risk for future
involvement in substance abuse. These services promote the conditions under
which people can confront situations in their lives in constructive and
healthy way without the destructive response of substance abuse. To promote
healthy living, Bacon Street conducts activities which:
-
Provide information about
alcohol and other drugs and their effects.
-
Address attitudes and
feelings related to the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
-
Develop skills and knowledge
to help people avoid abusing alcohol and other drugs.
-
Confront problems which may
lead to the abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
-
Improve the quality of life
in our communities.

A fee is

and deductible assigned to you by your healthcare plan. If you are
unable to pay the co-payment and deductible, or do not have healthcare
coverage, you will be required to pay a fee which is based on your ability
